J.A. Happ on the Postseason Roster?

categories | Uncategorized

I know this runs the risk of a jinx, but as the Phillies plan out their rotation over the balance of the season it would be useful to have an idea of who’d they like to have available if they get to the playoffs.  As I imagine many Phillies fans do, I believe that J.A. Happ has earned a spot.

Rich Hofmann says it could happen. Any thoughts on on who or should not be on the roster?  I haven’t taken a serious look at how the 25 man would break down, but it would be nice to have Golson’s legs available to pinch run or maybe even Marson so that Charlie wouldn’t be scared to use Coste to pinch although - although putting him into his first serious action in the playoffs is probably a non-starter.

Worth noting: the Phillies only carried ten pitchers into the NLDS last year

Golson and Marson were September call-ups, meaning they aren’t eligible to play for us in the playoffs (since we don’t have any eligible DL’ed position players). neither is Iguchi, for that matter, although that won’t be a devastating loss.

nope, just spoken like a man who didn’t realize the rules had changed. before 2007, you could only replace a DL’ed pitcher with a pitcher and a DL’ed position player with a position player. and since the Phils have no DL’ed position players, neither Golson nor Marson would have been eligible. apparently that rule changed last year though, so now position is irrelevant as long as the replacement was on the 40-man roster.

but i’m pretty sure it still holds that if a player gets hurt mid-series, he can only be replaced by someone who plays his position and who’s on the 40-man roster.

First, Rich Hoff says we have ” a handful” of DL slots to play with. Do guys like Zagurski & Mathiesen count?? Seems kinda shady of they do?

So do we have 3 slots to play with?

If we leave the obvious guys off the list (e.g. you carry both Eyre & JC so you have the 2 lefties out of the pen, right?) - there are still a lot of interesting questions. Here’s my take, and a few queries:

1. I gotta have Golson. All you gotta remember is Dave Roberts swiping that game from the Yankees all by his own self in the break the jinx year. I want Jimmy, the Flyin’ and Golson all ready to blaze

2. I do carry Happ - no question in my mind.

3. The Complex makes a good point with Marson, and I penciled him in to my 25. Didn’t realize how young he is til I looked at the active roster tonight , just 22.

4. It looks to me like they have been taking a long look at Seanez these past few nights. Could they carry him? over Condrey? Is Durbin back to healthy?

5. Do you leave Jenkins off? I did. At this point, you gotta like Stairs bat better, right? and you don’t need either one in the field.

But hey, win! we still gotta get there
