 Morning Rounds, September 5th

categories | Morning Rounds

For a day without any local sports being played, last night was faaaannnnnnnnnnnntastic.  Football season came back, and neither the Giants nor the Redskins looked particularly unbeatable (or good), plus Novak Djokovic got the entire U.S. Open crowd to viciously boo him, hopefully starting a rivalry with all of America (if Andy Murray takes him down, watch out).

Now, in what seems like the biggest weekend since God rested, the Phils are geared up for a three game set against the choking Mets (capped by a Sunday Ace v. Ace finale) and the Birds start their championship run.

If the Phils take less than two and/or the Eagles drop an extremely winnable game (not likely) I’ll be singing a different tune Monday, but for at least this morning … it’s a wonderful time to be a fan.

Oh football season, I missed you so. I seriously don’t know how non-sports fans can deal with seasonal change.  I’d hate to be them.

“I wouldn’t ever set out to hurt anyone deliberately unless it was, you know, important -like a league game or something.” - Dick Butkus

Three lines on their world:

  1. In the glorious return of football season Plaxico and the Giants picked up where they left
  2. Djokovic took out Roddick, and apparently wants to be the bad guy
  3. Vandy knocked off Steve Spurrier and South Carolina

Three lines on ours:

  1. After taking a day to rest up and lick their wounds the Phillies head to New York for three
  2. The Birds gear up for Sunday
  3. JoePa laid down the hammer on four Penn State players who weren’t smart enough to get rid of some week three hours after they were told to

Phillies, Birds, Sixers, Flyers and FUCKTHEMETS after the jump

PHILLIES

Todd Zolecki explains what we all know too well: the Phillies have to win. SKIP

David Murphy’s off-day story says it’s time for the Phils to show and prove. SKIP

Bob Ford has an excruciatingly poorly worded lede, but then goes ahead and holds Dave Montgomery to the fire for not going all-in. READ

Murphy reports that the Phils have shown interest in Tad Iguchi. SKIP

USA Today says that the Phils are in familiar spot for September, and need to win now to close the gap. READ

Randy Miller brings it back to 1964. READ

EAGLES

Paul Domowitch brings you five things to watch in the Rams game. SKIP

Ashley Fox how gets behind the betting odds. READ

Bob Brookover tries to find out what to expect from the Birds’ D. READ

*if you can only skip one Gary Miles claims he knows what’s cool in the NFL, presumably because he’s a sports editor. Now, career-wise I should probably be cautious when ripping editors, but what the fuck? His column sucked. Him claiming to know what’s cool in sports because he’s vaguely associated with them is like is like someone from Alaska claiming they’re accomplished at foreign policy because they live somewhat close (you know, just a short ocean away) from one of the most unpopulated parts of Russia.  SKIP

Tim Panaccio (whose name I finally spelled right on the first try) says that Steven Jackson is going to a be a focus of the Eagles defense, which, is like breaking the news that Christian Bale is probably going to play a big role in the next Batman. Sure it’s true but … SKIP

Included in the Inqy’s notes: Chris Clemons is ready to play, Reggie Brown is day-to-day, DeSean Jackson is awesome, and more. READ

Bob Brookover reports that Reggie Brown might not be ready to go Sunday. SKIP

Rob Parent of the Delco times says that Jerome McDougle could end up haunting the Eagles.  READ

Steve Patton takes a look at Tony Hunt: Fullback. SKIP

Nick Fierro says that the Eagles leaders better be sure the Lito/Sheldon/Rosenhaus issue doesn’t boil over onto the rest of the team. READ

The Eagles are Beer are staying together for five more years. SKIP

SIXERS

For the Complex reader with $4 million to spare: Allen Iverson’s Villanova home isn’t selling, so the former Sixers star just slashed the price. READ

If you have a talent the Sixers want you to perform at their home games (I should probably mention that the ‘talent’ they’re looking for is more “dancing” and less “shooting”, though I imagine both would be acceptable). SKIP

FLYERS

Sam Cardichi says Simon Gagne is ready to take the ice, and that he should be considered an addition when looking at this team. READ

TODAY and MORE

Two Local Boys are set to take their teams first snap this weekend and the basketball HOF will induct a member with local ties tonight

Around these parts we may try to goad the Mets fans into a fight (shouldn’t be too hard, as a breed they’re morons), will try to actually take a look at the Sixers roster and more.

As always, feel free to email with any questions, suggestions, comments or complaints.
