Charlie: The Nationals were “absolutely” throwing at Utley

During the postgame press conference, David Murphy (I think it was Murphy) asked Charlie if he thought Jesus Colome and the Nationals were throwing at Utley. Cholly replied “absolutely I do,” and pointed out where Nats catcher Jesus Flores was setting up (pretty much directly behind Utley).
When asked if that was something the team would react against in the future, Charlie replied, “that is something that you don’t say a word about,” leaned back in his chair and ended the interview.
Utley drilled again, defeated Nationals want a brawl

uh-oh. Jesus Colome just drilled Utley in his back. Phillies Nation and Federal Baseball agree that this might heat up - and agree that that isn’t a good for the Phils. As Edward at FB warns, Careful what you start Kendrick, there’s a lot of games to be played…
It won’t happen tonight - nobody fights late in a game on getaway day - but don’t be shocked if someone gets hit the next time these guys face off.
F*** with Utley and the Phillies will Break You

With the guy who broke the Chase Utley’s hand on the mound, the Phillies respond to their star in kind one full year later.
Don’t worry, he’s fine now though … Zimmerman left the game with a right-hand contusion, but x-rays are negative and he is currently listed as day-to-day.
Sweet, odd, late, obscure payback was just not meant to be.
Phillies Notes from the Trade Deadline

Alright, pay attention team, since all beat guys have this save this stuff until early tomorrow technically we’re actually going to break some news here. In bullet point form too
- The Phillies were close to adding another starter, but it was a three team trade and the third team balked late
- the starter they would have added would not have been a first or second option, meaning that they were looking for another guy for the back of the rotation. No word on whether a secondary move was in the works or if they were planning to move someone out of the rotation - or both.
- At one point today GM Pat Gillick felt confident that the Phillies were going to add Manny Ramirez
- The reason none of the lefty relievers on the market (Sherrill, Mahay, Fuentes, Ohman) weren’t moved was that the asking price was very, very high
- Charlie, Pat Gillick, and Mike Arbuckle all still see J.A. Happ as a starter. Combine that with the fact that the team was in the market and for a starter and one can read between the lines to see that the Phils were dangling one of their starters. Smart money is on Myers, although Blanton’s name has been tossed around as well.
- Cole Hamels is not in the building, but this was obciously not a result of a trade. He left for St. Louis a day early. Something they did not tell the press this morning (Thanks Phillies PR!)

Phillie Phanatic > Some DBag Phillie Phanatic rip off

As much as I hate the man for getting all the ladies, the Phillie Phanatic is widely regarded as the greatest mascot in sports. However, titles like that aren’t just thrown out aloofly by jerks with internet access and too much time on their hands (yeah, right) - they need to be won, and defended.
That last part brings us to HomeRubDerby.com’s (annual?) MLB Mascot Tournament of Champions. We’re joining live from the second round, where the Phanatic is squaring off against some giant green unidentified monster from Chicago.
Sure it is irrelevant and daft, but it is also another chance to get Philadelphia a much-needed championship. Go off and cast a vote for our big green fella.
Eagles guard Todd Herremans is Sexy, Single.
Everyday I at read through the Dailies, normally cover-to-cover. However, every so often I come across a feature - like this week’s Daily News special on Philadelphia’s “Sexy Singles” - that I tend to skip over entirely.
Not only do I not care about who the DN thinks I should be dating but, as Tom pointed out, the entire section seems like a hand-out to corporate sponsors, and nobody wants that. (NOTE: potential corporate sponsors: I am ready am willing to renege on that statement faster than you can say “icy cold refreshment.”)
But this morning as I was making myself breakfast I flipped on CSN’s Sportrise and saw a report from Derrick Gunn that alerted me to a familiar face among this years’ singles:
Apparently Herremans’ teammates and coaches had been unaware of the guard’s extracirrcular activities, they were having a field day with the new information. I expect that yesterday was a long day for the OLineman from Michigan. As third-year tackle Winston Justice pointed out, “That is a big move for an offensive lineman.”
Ladies, Herreman’s full profile is HERE. Enjoy.
Morning Rounds, July 31st
Morning Roundup: “The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me.” - Manny Ramirez
![]() |
Three lines on their world:
- Manny Ramirez is really close to being a Marlin
- The Yankees added Pudge Rodriguez
- and the Brett Farve situation keeps getting weirder, as the team is trying to pay him to stay away and he is trying to report to a camp where he’s not wanted
Three lines on ours:
- The Marlins took down the Metropolitans
- Which opened the door for the Phillies to move back into first in the east. They did, by taking care of those Nationals in Washinton.
- And Big Jon Runyon sounded off on ShawnAndrews at camp
Phillies, Birds, Sixers, Flyers all before the trade deadline, after the jump
Manny being a Marlin

Will Carroll at Basball Prospectus is reporting that the Marlins, Pirates, and Red Sox have put a three team trade on the desk on commissioner Bud Selig.
As structured:
- Marlins get Manny Ramirez, one prospect (Red Sox), and cash (likely covering Ramirez’s remaining salary)
- Pirates get Jeremy Hermida and three prospects (two Marlins, one Red Sox)
- Red Sox get Jason Bay and John Grabow
Seeing as the prospects still aren’t named this trade has the ability to fall apart, but I’ll offer my initial thoughts anyway: fantastic trade for me.
Even with Manny I’m not scared of the Marlins and since they play the Mets just as often as they play the Phils down the stretch it would presumably hurt both New York and Philly equally. Plus it adds Manny, who is just offensively likeable to the division; as a baseball fan I have to happy about.
As for the other two teams: anything that makes the Red Sox even more unlikeable is a plus is my book, and lets see who these prospects turn out to be before we comment either way on the Bucs.
